Double glazing can be the most expensive improvement you make to your property but its benefits can also be huge, with the increased insulation, lack of drafts and noise reduction greatly improving the energy performance of your home, as well as making it a much nicer place to live in.
Double glazing grants
We’re often asked if grants are available for double glazing and unfortunately the answer is no, there are no grants available for the replacement of double glazing through the ECO scheme or any other. That doesn’t mean it’s all bad news though as there are opportunities to have double glazing installed through the Green Deal scheme.
Double Glazing Loans
The way Green Deal works means that you will be paying back the cost of the double glazing through your energy bills, so it would be more like a loan rather than a grant. The benefits of doing it this way are that you shouldn’t see a change in the cost of your energy bills and the work will be carried out by Green Deal assured tradesmen – and of course you get a lovely warm home courtesy of your brand new double glazing!
Local authority grants
It has been reported that some local authorities in the UK offer means-tested grants for double glazing replacement. This is not a UK-wide scheme and any specific rules and requirements would be set individually, so it’s worth contacting your local authority to see if any double glazing grants are available and, if so, what requirements you need to fulfil in order to qualify.
Another incentive often mentioned with double glazing is scrappage schemes, where the government would contribute to the cost of your new double glazing when you dispose of the old. Similar schemes have run for used cars and old boilers but at the moment there are no official scrappage schemes for double glazing. Although double glazing grants and funding are few and far between there are Government grants available which will help reduce your energy bills through home insulation and new boiler grants.
